Wavy Feathers Qiviut Cap

by

This lacy lightweight Qiviut Cap is a variation of traditional Shetland Isles Feather and Fan or Old Shale patterning that Barbara Walker calls “Japanese Feathers”. When qiviut is worked into a cap it produces an elegant, stylish covering one can wear day and night that weighs less than one-half ounce yet is warm when needed and breathes so it’s cool in warmer environments as well. Worn as a Chemo Cap, you'll never want to take it off! One size fits most. One skein makes two caps so share the joy!

Yarn: MOCO 100% Qiviut Fingering weight, one-half ounce, 110 yards. Or one-half ounce of MOCO 45/45/10 Qiviut/Merino/Silk fingering weight yarn, 110 yards.
Needles: US4 (3.5mm), US6 (4mm) 16” circular, and US6 (4mm) double point needles.
Accessories: 1 stitch marker or one for each pattern repeat with 1 contrasting center color if desired.
Gauge: Approximately 20 stitches to 4in/10cm relaxed in stockinet portion of pattern. This will stretch more than you’d expect.

k = knit stitch or number of stitches

Knitting:
With US 6 (4mm) 16” circular needle Cast On 88 stitches. Change to US 4 (3.5mm) 16” circular needle before beginning first round of knitting, this will help keep the cast on loose. Place marker and join being careful not to twist stitches following the first round of knitting.

Work Garter Stitch edging as follows: knit one round, purl one round; repeat these two rows three times. 6 rows total.

Change to US 6 (4mm) 16” circular needle and work Wavy Feathers pattern rows 1-28 a total of one and one half times stopping after row 19, pattern rows total 47.

Shape crown:
Change to double point needles as you work the first decreasing row. Separate stitches on 3 or 4 double point needles following a purl stitch or pattern repeat.

Break yarn and pull tail through stitches on needles a couple of times, pulling the center tight. Work in the loose yarn tails.

Gently hand wash in warm water using shampoo or very mild soap. Rinse and remove excess water squeezing gently. Try it on to get the size you need and dry flat or on a balloon slightly smaller than the head size desired.

Guaranteed itch-free to feel really good against the skin and so light you’ll forget you’re wearing it. Enjoy!
