Patchwork Qiviut Cap
By

This is an easy cap to knit though
it does require a number of seams once all of the pieces are made. You can
use any assortment of yarns that will keep to the given gauge so use up some
of those remnants! It is very portable and takes only 10-15 minutes to
complete each piece. Play with colors and textures to make each cap unique! Qiviut makes it an exceptional Chemo Cap for lightweight warmth.
Size: one size fits most
though large, can be adjusted in final headband. For smaller size, use
smaller
needles and 6.5sts/in gauge.
Yarn: 1.5oz (approximately 350 yards) 100% Qiviut Fingering weight in 2 or
more colors.
Needles: US 6 (4.25mm) 16 circular or double pointed.
Gauge: 6 stitches to 1 inch

Bind off in Purl
Triangles: Work through Row 18, 19sts.
Knit Bind Off next row in MC.
Construction: Seam 1 leg of each V
together, only the bottom half of a diamond at a time. See the photo above right
for beginning Center Crown & first 8 Diamonds detail.
- 4 Diamonds in Center Crown
- 8 Diamonds, 2 in each V of
Center, to complete the Crown.
- 8 Diamonds, 1 in each V of last
join, to turn the Crown and begin the Head section.
- 8 Diamonds, 1 in each V of last
join, to complete the Head section.
- 8 Triangles, 1 in each V of
last join, to complete the Cap shape.
Garter Stitch Headband:
-
Using US 6 by 16
inch circular needle, Pick Up 17 stitches for each Triangle (2 stitches for
each were used in the seams). Place marker and join. 136 stitches (more or
less is OK).
-
This next row is the
sizing row. For Qiviut especially, I like to make the Headband about 2-3
inches smaller than needed because Qiviut does not have the elasticity of
most wool yarns. Try your cap on to determine how much youll want to
tighten it up keeping in mind that it will stretch somewhat. Decide how many
inches/stitches you need to decrease.
-
For my large, 23
inch head, I decreased to 120 stitches total by working one row of Purl 6,
P2Tog around. I got this by dividing 136 by 16 (the number of stitches to
decrease), which is 8.5. Therefore I purled 2 less stitches than my given 8
before purling 2 together. Dont worry if it doesnt divide evenly, youll
never notice.
-
Continue working in
Garter Stitch, Knit 1 round, Purl 1 round, alternating colors as desired
every 2 rounds.
-
Bind off loosely in
Knit.
Work in all those yarn tails, whew!
Hand Wash in warm water with mild shampoo squeezing gently, Rinse, Air Dry, and
Enjoy!
