"Simply Knit, Wonderfully Wearable". Pamela Pascal Rush of 3 Trails HandKnit Designs has a wonderful collection of patterns for hand knitters, most of which use Mountain Colors Yarns. There are many other yarns that would also be suitable. I am updating this page and deleting patterns as they sell out, last update 05/26/2008.


Cardigans

  • Cardigan with Optional Hood: CD-101 "This is a very easy sweater and knits up quickly with minimal finishing. Hood adds a useful and fun touch. Measure sleeve length as you go to assure proper fit. Sweater appeared in Stitches and on back cover of Knitter's Winter '97 (No. 49)." Sweater knit in bulky boucle, shown in Mountain Colors Moguls and trimmed in 4/8's Wool. Sizes Small (up to 34" chest) 530 yards, Medium (up to 38" chest) 550 yards, Large (up to 42" chest) 600 yards, and X-Large (up to 46" chest) 700 yards (S, M, L add 10" ease, XL adds 6" ease). Add 50 yards for optional hood and 250 yards of worsted weight yarn for trim. Use needle size that will produce a proper gauge of 10 stitches and 15 rows per 4 inches.

  • Loopy Jacket: CD-108 "This very easy jacket knits up quickly at 2.5 stitches per inch in reverse stockinette stitch. a luxurious fabric that will take you from work into an evening out on the town." Designed for sizes from 32" chest to 50" in 2 inch increments for a perfect fit in Mountain Colors Mohair Loop yarn. Recommended needles size US 10.5 (6.5mm).

  • Twists & Seeds Cardigan: CD-106 "This is a wonderful light weight sweater in a very simple pattern. Because the setup for each size was a little different, I have added an extra set of tables to simplify the process for the knitter. Cable pattern is only turned every 12 rows. Coordinates with SK-122 Twists & Seeds Footie." In chest sizes from 32 to 50 inches with added ease of 5 inches for each. This pattern calls for a sport/DK weight yarn. All yardage is approximate and may very from knitter to knitter. Use US needles size 2 (2.75mm) and 4 (3.5mm).

  • Wooly Bully: CD-103 "Last Winter when I was running errands in the cold I lusted for a warm, wooly sweater and this is it. Side vents and hood make a great in and out of the car sweater on cold, windy days. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I will this one!" Requires US size 8 (5mm) and 10 (6mm) needles and Mountain Colors 3 Ply Montana Wool which is remarkably soft and warm.   • Cables & Diamonds Pullover: PO-102 "This is one of my favorite sweaters to borrow out of my husband's closet. A very simple stitch pattern that looks harder than it actually is. Good for a new cable knitter as cable is only turned every 20 rows. Coordinates with Cables & Diamonds socks." Unisex sizes in 2 inch increments from 30" to 52". Recommended needles size US 3 (3.25mm) and 5 (3.75mm). Knit in Mountain Colors 4/8's Wool, a light worsted weight.

  • Moose Walker Pullover: PO-105 "During a trip to Montana, my husband Dave asked Diana & Leslie at Mountain Colors to develop a color for him with browns and blacks. Moose Creek was the result. Dave wanted a warm sweater with cables all over. The cable pattern is not as difficult as it looks and instructions are provided for both flat and round knitting of the stitch pattern. Try the pattern out with the coordinating Moose Walker Sock." To fit unisex sizes X-Small (30" w/ ease 34"), Small (34" w/ ease 39"), Medium (38" w/ ease 44"), Large (44" w/ ease 49"), X-Large (50" w/ ease 54"). Requires US size 5 (3.75mm) and 7 (4.5mm) circular and double pointed needles with worsted or light worsted weight yarn.

Socks

Individual sock patterns are $4 each. Most of these socks will fit an average medium to large ladies foot. Use smaller needles for smaller feet. All use US 2 (2.75mm) double point needles, or size you need to obtain gauge, and 350 yards of sport/DK weight yarn, unless otherwise indicated. Hand Painted Kit prices are listed below and do not include attractive bundling.

  • Boxes & Bars Socks: "A very dense sock to warm cold feet outdoors. Would also look wonderful in your favorite solid color." Will fit a ladies medium to large foot.

  • Little Brick Kickers: SK-112 "This sock is a slip stitch pattern that works up quickly with the formation of little bricks set in their garter stitch mortar." Worked in two colors, try coordinating two of Mountain Colors colorways for an unusual effect. Combine any of Mountain Colors Hand Paints with a coordinating Solitary Color. Or mix Mountain Colors multi-color Weavers Wool with your favorite fingering or DK yarn.

  • Montana Moose Socks:* SK-104 "A fun sock to knit and a good way to start simple intarsia. Sock is knit flat until the heel is turned and then in the round to the toe. Will fit a ladies medium to large foot. Use size 3mm (US 2.5) double pointed and straight needles and 250 yards DK weight yarn in main color with 140 yards in contrast color.

  • Moose Walker: SK-120 "A snug fitting warm sock with an easy traveling cable pattern. Coordinates with Moose Walker Pullover."

  • Diana's One Skein Vest: VT-107 "Diana at Mountain Colors wanted a vest that could be knit from one skein of Wool Crepe. This little cropped vest is fun and quick to knit. Up to a size 42 or vest circumference of 47 inches may be knit from one skein of Wool Crepe. (Size 44-50 require two skeins of Wool Crepe.)" Sweater is worked double stranded throughout. Size US 8 (5mm) and 10 (6mm) needles are used. Vest is sized in two inch increments from 32 to 50 inches total with 5 inches of additional ease.

Mountain Colors Specifications

All Hand Painted Yarns can vary from dye lot to dye lot. Be certain to order the amount of yarn you will need for your intended project. Most orders for any of Mountain Colors' Yarn Styles, Colors, and Kits are Dyed-to-Order and are drop-shipped directly from Mountain Colors in Montana. Please allow from 4 to 6 weeks for creation of the yarns you request plus shipping time. Most orders will not take this long. This guarantees matching dye lots so you know you'll get exactly what you want. Even with matched dye lots hand painted yarns can vary from skein to skein, if noticeable, knit alternatively from 2 skeins. Unleash your creativity to mix and match textures and colors! These exceptional yarns are worth the short wait!
